My name is Olivia Birg and I’m 19 years old. I currently live with my Mom, Samantha, my Dad, Danny, my brother, Owen, and my dog, Gifford. I am the first born American on my Mom’s side and third generation American on my Dad’s side. My mom’s family came from England. A week after my Nana and Poppop got married they moved to Nova Scotia, Canada where my mom and her two brothers were born. Because of a job opportunity my Poppop had as a mechanical engineer, they uprooted their home and moved to Southern California. My dad’s family also comes from Europe but they moved from Germany right before World War II. My Grandma’s family lived in Kansas and my Grandpa’s family lived in Wisconsin. After college but prior to them meeting, they moved to Southern California and joined a Tall Club. They met at a Tall Club St. Patrick’s Day party and later went on to have 5 kids, including two sets of twins one of which being my Dad.

I am a second year student at Moorpark College, this is actually my last semester. I am a Communications major and am hoping to transfer to either UCLA or Colorado State University for the Fall of 2021. I started at Moorpark College in Spring of 2020, prior to that I went to Central Washington University for the Fall 2019 semester. I’m still exploring what I want to do as a future career but I know I want to be working with people and making a positive impact. I’ve always been a people person and I love helping my community. My dream job would be a motivational speaker on the importance of mental health. I would love to travel around the country speaking to middle school through college age students about the mental health field and why it’s an important aspect of our everyday lives. I currently work at the Thousand Oaks Teen Center, I’m a tutor, and I volunteer at my church. To say I’m busy is an understatement but I would not have it any other way. I love working with kids and teaching them different skills or points of knowledge.

I’m taking a media writing course because it’s an incredibly valuable skill to learn and I think it could be beneficial for a future career. Because I don’t have a direct career path in mind, I’ve been trying to strengthen and broaden my abilities so I have a wide range of options once I graduate. It’s important for me to be versatile and a media writing class is an opportunity to improve my writing skills. I’m interested in media because with all the technology that’s available to us today, media is an essential part of our communication with the world. I’m fascinated by how it functions and the impact it has on us.
